Microsoft has announced that the Xbox is the world’s first carbon-aware game console

Microsoft is aiming to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2030, and has reached several milestones in the past few years toward that goal.

Microsoft has announced that Xbox has become the first carbon-aware console and will optimize the update and download schedule for all versions of Xbox to reduce its carbon footprint.

When a user’s Xbox is connected to the Internet and regional carbon intensity data is available, all updates and downloads will be scheduled for the time when the most renewable energy can be used, rather than the previous “random” wake-up call between 2am and 6am.

However, to access this feature, you first need to set the power on the Xbox to “Power Off”, which the preview machine does automatically. Microsoft claims this can reduce power consumption by up to 20 times compared to putting the console into sleep mode. It is important to note that remote wake up is not supported when this option is enabled.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S console will be the first to get the feature, and the Xbox One will soon receive an update. IT Home fans should note, however, that Xbox One consoles will start up more slowly when this option is enabled.

Microsoft says that for every two Xboxes turned on for a year, it reduces carbon emissions by the same amount as a tree planted for ten years.
